BEIJING MEDAL RETURNED
He was initially disqualified from the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, where he won bronze, by the International Olympic Committee [IOC] Disciplinary Commission after a sample he provided at the 2008 Games indicated the presence of exogenous testosterone. He and the silver medallist Vadim Devyatovskiy, who had also been stripped of his medal due to an adverse analytical finding, appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport [CAS] in December 2008. In June 2010 CAS upheld the appeal because of violations of documentation and reporting requirements made by the testing laboratory in Beijing. As a result the medals were returned to him and Devyatovskiy. (tas-cas.org, 10 Jun 2010; espn.com, 10 Jun 2010)

SANCTION
In May 2012 a sample he provided at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens was re-analysed and tested positive for the prohibited substance metandienone. He was suspended for two years, in addition to all of his results between 22 August 2004 and 21 August 2006 being annulled, including his silver medal in Athens. His period of ineligibility ended on 03 August 2014. (IAAF, 27 Apr 2014, 09 Apr 2014; throwholics.com, 25 Jul 2015; olympic.org, 05 Dec 2012)
