Originally involved in camogie [female hurling], athletics became her primary focus as a teenager. She competed in sprints before moving to middle-distance running [800m]. "It started when I was eight years old, on my school sports day I won the class race. Then my mum brought me to the local running club and I loved it since then. I played camogie as well for years but then I started making international teams for running when I was about 15 or 16, so I gave up the camogie to focus on that." She trains eight times a week. "It varies depending on whether I have races or not. I do two gym sessions, about three track sessions and some recovery and some long runs in the middle of that. Then there's stretching, massage and mobility work and focusing on my recovery in between that as well." (evoke.ie, 18 Jul 2021)

General Interest

General
MOVE BACK TO IRELAND AND COVID BREAK
After spending six months at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, United States of America, she decided to move back to Ireland to attend Dublin City University [DCU], where she began working with coach Enda Fitzpatrick in 2019. She also feels the one-year postponement of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo due to the COVID-19 pandemic helped her chances of qualifying for the event. "I don't know if I would have made it last year [speaking in 2021]. I think I would have had a chance but I used the extra year to gain experience racing at a senior level. I feel like I have a lot more experience racing against the best in the world, which I definitely needed and will need going into Tokyo. I'm way stronger now. I didn't qualify easily but it was straightforward enough whereas I would have been scraping in last year [2020]. This is a dream come true. I owe it all to my coach Enda." HERITAGE
Born in Ireland to a Sudanese father and an Irish mother, her mother first introduced her to camogie [female hurling] as a child. "My dad is from Sudan and he was teaching in Maynooth [Ireland] and my mum was working in education when they met. My mum is from Kilkenny, so she had a really big interest in hurling and still does so that's why I got into camogie." (evoke.ie, 18 Jul 2021)
