Kate Shortman and Isabelle Thorpe secured their place in Tokyo through their performance at the 2021 Olympic qualifying tournament in Barcelona. The pair finished seventh in Barcelona to clinch a qualification berth for their first Olympic Games as a duet.

Shortman and Thorpe have competed at two editions of the world championships, but are yet to progress to a final on the world stage. They placed 14th in both the free and technical routines in the preliminary rounds in 2019, which was an improvement on their 16th-place finish in the free routine from two years earlier. At the 2020 European Championships, which were held in May 2021 in Budapest, they finished seventh in both the free and technical routines.
