Germany placed sixth at the 2016 Olympic Games, their highest ranking in the women's team all-around competition since reunification. Germany claimed their only Olympic medal at the 1936 Games in Berlin, where they won gold.

The team secured their spot at Tokyo 2020 with a ninth-place finish at the 2019 World Championships in Stuttgart. The highest rank Germany have recorded at the world championships is sixth, which they managed in 2011.

The German women finished 10th at the 2018 European Championships. In 10 appearances at the tournament from 1996 to 2018, they came closest to a medal when they ranked fourth in 2014.
