The United States of America secured their place in Tokyo through the Final Olympic Qualification Tournament in Paris, France, in June 2021.

The US team won their only Olympic medal at the first Games to feature the women's team recurve event, claiming bronze in Seoul in 1988. Since then they have made five further Olympic appearances, recording a highest rank of fifth at the 2000 Games in Sydney. Their last appearance was at London 2012, where they lost to the People's Republic of China in the quarterfinals and placed sixth overall.

They were once a dominant force at the world championships, winning 14 medals [eight gold, two silver, four bronze] between 1952 and 1991. However, in 11 appearances since 1997 they have not finished on the world championship podium. At the 2019 edition in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, the US women lost to Sweden in the first round.
