General Interest

General
Qualifying automatically as host nation of the 2020 Games, the Japanese women's recurve team are looking to finish on the Olympic podium for the second time, having previously won bronze at the 2012 Games in London. Debuting when the event was added to the Olympic programme at Seoul 1988, the Japanese have appeared at six of the seven editions of the Games since. Four years ago in Rio de Janeiro, they were defeated 5-1 in the quarterfinals by the Republic of Korea.

At the most recent world championships in 2019, Japan exited the competition in the second elimination round in a 6-0 loss to the Russian Federation. They last finished on the podium at the 2009 edition of the tournament, claiming silver in Ulsan, Republic of Korea. They just missed out on a medal in 2015 in Copenhagen, where they lost in the semifinals to India and were defeated by the Republic of Korea in the third-fourth playoff.

Japan secured bronze at the Asian Games in both 2014 and 2018. Their sole gold medal at the Games came in 1978 in Bangkok.
