General Interest

General
The Republic of Korea are the reigning Olympic champions, and have been the dominant force in the men's team event. They have secured five out of the eight gold medals on offer in the event since 1988, with no other nation winning more than one. The Koreans returned to the top of the podium at the 2016 Games after taking bronze in London in 2012. The bronze came in the wake of three consecutive gold medals between 2000 and 2008. The only Games at which they have failed to win a medal of any type is Barcelona in 1992, when they were ranked fifth.

At Rio 2016, the Korean team topped the ranking round and then went on to claim gold without losing or drawing a set. A 6-0 defeat of the United States of America in the gold medal match came after triumphs over the Netherlands and Australia by the same score.

The Korean team secured their ticket to Tokyo at the 2019 World Championships in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, where they were defeated by the People's Republic of China in the semifinals. However, they bounced back to overcome the Netherlands in the bronze medal match. It was the Republic of Korea's second consecutive bronze medal at the world championships. The Republic of Korea are 11-time world champions, a total second only to the US team.

The Koreans have eight Asian Games gold medals, which is the most of any nation, although they have not won gold since 2010. On home soil in Incheon in 2014 they finished third, and in Indonesia in 2018 they were beaten in the final by Chinese Taipei.
