General Interest

General
Australia qualified for Tokyo 2020 by reaching the quarterfinals of the 2019 World Championships in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. They are making their eighth Olympic appearance at the 2020 Games.

Australia won their first Olympic medal at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. Having rallied to beat France 5-3 in the quarterfinals after the French team won the first set and the second set finished in a draw, Australia then faced the Republic of Korea in their semifinal and were defeated 6-0. However, they bounced back to beat the People's Republic of China in the third-place play-off and secure bronze. Prior to 2016, their best Olympic result was a fourth-place finish at the 1996 Games.

Australia were eliminated from the 2019 World Championships by the Chinese team at the quarterfinal stage. Their overall ranking of fifth in 's-Hertogenbosch was Australia's best world championship result since they claimed bronze, their only worlds medal, in 1991.
