General Interest
Having competed at the 1964 Tokyo Games under the name Northern Rhodesia, athletes from Zambia competed under the current name for the first time in Mexico City in 1968.
Since 1968, the NOC has sent teams to compete at every Games apart from 1976, with boxing and athletics the sports in which the most athletes have competed. They are also the sports that have seen Zambian athletes win the NOC's only two medals.
The first medal, a bronze, was won by boxer Keith Mwila in the men's light flyweight division at the Los Angeles Games in 1984. Mwila, in his only Olympic appearance, lost on decision to the eventual silver medallist.
The NOC's most recent medallist, Samuel Matete, competed in athletics at four consecutive Olympic Games between 1988 and 2000, running the 400m hurdles event at each, as well as the 4x400m relay in 1988. He won his silver medal in the only Olympic 400m hurdles final he reached, at the Atlanta Games in 1996.
At the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, Zambia sent a team of five men and two women who competed in four sports.
