General Interest
The Virgin Islands, US made its Olympic debut at the 1968 Games in Mexico City and has competed at each edition of the Olympic Games since then, with the exception of Moscow 1980. Athletes from the NOC have competed mainly in athletics, swimming, and sailing.
Sailor Peter Holmberg is the only US Virgin Islander to win an Olympic medal, claiming silver in the Finn class at the 1988 Games in Seoul. It was Holmberg's second Olympic Games, following his debut in 1984, and the third Olympic Games for his family as his father, Richard, represented the NOC in sailing at the 1972 Games in Munich.
The Olympic appearance record for the Virgin Islands, US is also held by a sailor. John Foster Sr. competed at five editions of the summer Games between 1972 and 1992, only missing out on the 1980 Games. He sailed together with his son John Foster Jr. in three of his appearances. However, Foster Sr.'s Olympic story does not end there as he also represented the Virgin Islands, US in bobsleigh at the 1988 Olympic Winter Games in Calgary, where he and teammate John Reeve placed 38th in the two-man competition.
Shooter Bruce Meredith is the oldest US Virgin Islander to have participated in the Games, competing in the men's 50m rifle prone at age 63 years and 155 days at Sydney 2000, while swimmer Shelley Cramer is the youngest. She was age 14 when she took part in the women's 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, and 100m butterfly at the 1976 Games in Montreal.
