General Interest
Vanuatu made its Olympic debut at the 1988 Games in Seoul, sending athletes to compete in athletics and boxing events. Since then, the majority of athletes from the small Pacific archipelago have competed in athletics events.
The 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro were the first in which Vanuatu did not send any track and field athletes to the Games. Four athletes represented Vanuatu in four sports in 2016, with Luigi Teilemb becoming the first athlete from the NOC to compete in a rowing event at the Games.
Mary Kapalu ran the 400m hurdles at the 1992, 1996 and 2000 Games as well as the 400m flat in 1992. She was the first athlete from Vanuatu to compete at three Olympic Games.
