General Interest

The United Arab Emirates made its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 1984 Games where an all-male, seven-member team competed in athletics events. Since that first Games appearance, the NOC has sent teams to every edition of the Games.

Shooting is the sport in which the NOC has had the most success, with its only gold medal so far coming in the shotgun discipline. Ahmed Almaktoum has the United Arab Emirates' two best results in shooting and they both came in 2004. His gold, won in the Athens 2004 double trap competition, came in a dominant performance where the then 40-year-old led the preliminary and final rounds on the way to an Olympic record score. He backed that performance up with a fourth in the trap event.

In 2016, the United Arab Emirates claimed its second Olympic medal, a bronze in the men's 81kg judo competition. Competing for his adopted NOC, judoka Sergiu Toma managed to reach the podium, something he had not achieved in his first two Olympic appearances [2008, 2012] representing his birth country of Moldova.
