Uganda - Profile
General Interest
Uganda made its Olympic debut in 1956 when it sent a three-person team to Melbourne, all of whom competed in athletics events.
At Uganda's fourth appearance at the Games, in 1968 in Mexico City, the NOC won its first medals. Boxers Eridari Mukwanga and Leo Rwabogo won silver [bantamweight] and bronze [flyweight], respectively.
At the next Games in Munich in 1972, Rwabogo would become the first Ugandan to win two Olympic medals when he fought his way to another silver, this time in the flyweight division.
His 1972 Games teammate John Akii-Bua went one better to win the NOC's first Olympic gold medal, in the men's 400m hurdles. Akii-Bua set a then-world record time of 47.82 seconds with a storming final-straight finish from lane one of the Munich track.
Uganda's only other Olympic gold medal was won by Stephen Kiprotich when he was victorious in men's marathon at the London 2012 Games. An unlikely winner, Kiprotich outpaced the group of pre-race favourites from Kenya to win by almost half a minute.
The large majority of Uganda's Olympic athletes have competed in athletics or boxing, with the two sports accounting for all of Uganda's seven total medals at the Games. At the 2016 Games in Rio, the trend continued with the NOC sending a 21-athlete delegation with 17 competing in athletics, two in boxing and two in swimming.
