Turkmenistan - Profile
General Interest
Turkmenistan took part in its first Olympic Games in 1996 and since then has sent teams to contest each edition of the Games. Before 1996, Turkmenistan-born athletes represented Russia, the Soviet Union and then the Unified Team.
Since Turkmenistan has competed at the Olympic Games as an independent nation, no athlete has won a medal, but at the London 2012 Games Umurbek Bazarbayev went closer than any other person under the central Asian country's flag. Competing in his fourth Games, Bazarbayev finished sixth in the men's 62kg weightlifting division, one better than his seventh in 2004.
At the Rio 2016 Games, Turkmenistan sent a delegation of five women and four men to compete across five sports. The team included the NOC's youngest ever Olympic competitor, Darya Semyonova, who was just 14 years and 72 days old when she swam the 100m breaststroke.
