General Interest

Boxing and athletics are the sports in which Tonga has entered the most competitors at the Olympic Games, but it is in the former that its athletes have secured the best results. Tonga's first Olympic team was made up entirely of boxers, they competed at the Los Angeles 1984 Games. Twelve years later in Atlanta, the NOC's first, and still only, Olympic medallist, Paea Wolfgramm, won silver in the men's super heavyweight division.

Wolfgramm fought his way through three bouts [he had a bye in the first round] on his way to the Atlanta 1996 gold medal round where he matched up with Wladimir Klitschko, a boxer who would go on to dominate the professional heavyweight division. Wolfgramm kept pace with Klitschko in the gold medal bout, before the Ukrainian gained separation in the final round. After the bout, it was revealed that the Tongan fought with a fractured wrist, suffered in the semifinal.

At the Rio 2016 Games, the NOC sent a seven-member team to compete in four sports, athletics, swimming, taekwondo and archery.
