General Interest

Togo won its first Olympic medal in 2008 in Beijing when Benjamin Boukpeti took bronze in the K1 canoe slalom event. Boukpeti competed at three editions of the Games [2004,2008, 2012], and was Togo's flag bearer at the opening ceremony in 2008 and 2012.

Direma Banasso was the first female to represent Togo at the Olympic Games, she ran the 800m at the Sydney 2000 Games. At the time she was just 14 years old and was her NOC's youngest competitor, but that record has since been surpassed by Rebecca Kpossi who swam the 50m freestyle in London at age 13 years and 192 days.
