General Interest
In 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste sent a three-person team to the Olympic Games to compete in athletics and mountain biking. Long-distance runner Augusto Ramos Soares went to his third Games and competed in the 1500m event. In London in 2012, he competed in the marathon and at Beijing 2008 he was listed to compete in the marathon but did not start the race.
The NOC made its Olympic debut at the 2004 Games in Athens, but four years earlier a four-member team of athletes hailing from the Southeast Asian nation competed at the Sydney Games under the IOC flag as Independent Olympic Athletes. Of the four - one male and one female marathon runner, a weightlifter and a boxer - only one, Aguida Amaral, ever competed for the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste. She went on to run the Olympic marathon for the second time in 2004 in Athens.
