Thailand - Profile
General Interest
Thailand won two gold, two silver and two bronze medals at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the NOC's equal-second best performance at the Games by total medals won. Weightlifters Sukanya Srisurat in the women's 58kg category and Sopita Tanasan in the women's 48kg category were the gold medal winners.
The Rio Olympic Games continued the NOC's record of winning at least one medal at every Games since 1984.
Thailand made its Olympic debut at the 1952 Games in Helsinki where an all-male eight-member team competed in athletics events. The NOC has sent teams to every Games since that first participation, apart from when it took part in the 1980 Olympic boycott.
Combat sports and weightlifting have proved the most fruitful for Thailand. The NOC's first medal was won in Montreal in 1976 when boxer Payao Pooltarat fought his way to bronze in the light-flyweight division, the first of a total 14 Olympic medals accumulated in the sport.
The most successful Thai boxer at the Olympic Games is Manus Boonjumnong. As a 24-year-old, Boonjumnong won light-welterweight gold at the 2004 Athens Games, and then a silver when defending the title at the next Games in Beijing. He is one of three Thai athletes to win multiple Olympic medals.
