General Interest

The United Republic of Tanzania has competed in all but one edition of the Games since its first in Tokyo in 1964. In those Games, it has primarily entered competitors in athletics and boxing events.

Athletes representing the NOC have won two medals, both in athletics and both in 1980. The two medallists both won silver, with Suleiman Nyambui taking second in the men's 5000m, less than a second behind gold medallist Miruts Yifter from Ethiopia. His teammate Filbert Bayi claimed his silver in the men's 3000m steeplechase.

At the Rio 2016 Games, the United Republic of Tanzania sent a team of seven athletes, with marathon runner Alphonce Simbu's fifth-place finish the closest that a Tanzanian athlete had come to the podium since 1980.
