General Interest
A number of Tajikistan-born athletes represented the Russian Empire and Soviet Union before the central Asian nation became independent in 1991, with some winning Olympic medals.
Archer Zebiniso Rustamova competed for the Soviet Union at the 1976 Games in Montreal, winning bronze in the women's individual competition. After retiring she would go on to become the first president of the Tajikistan Olympic Committee.
Tajikistan competed as an independent nation for the first time in 1996. It was 12 years later that the first athletes representing Tajikistan would win Olympic medals. Rasul Bokiev took bronze in the men's 73kg judo event in Beijing. Ten days later Tajikistan had its second medal, this time a silver, when Yusup Abdusalamov lost in the freestyle wrestling 84kg division final.
At the most recent Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Tajikistan won its first Olympic gold medal when hammer thrower Dilshod Nazarov threw 78.68m to claim victory. The Games in Brazil were Nazarov's fourth, the most by an athlete representing Tajikistan.
