General Interest

Suriname has won two medals in its Olympic history, and both were claimed by swimmer Anthony Nesty.

Nesty, a three-time Olympian, made his debut at the Games in 1984 as a 16-year-old, not reaching the final in either of the two events he entered - the 100m freestyle or 100m butterfly. That all changed four years later when he stepped up to win gold in the 100m butterfly, touching out silver medallist and all-time great Matt Biondi by 0.01 of a second in the final. He returned to the Olympic Games to defend his title in 1992, but could only manage a bronze.

Runner Letitia Vriesde was one of the first two women to represent Suriname, she did so at the 1988 Games in Seoul. She would go on to compete at a further four Olympic Games, reaching the second round of the 800m on a number of occasions and the 1500m once.

At the Rio 2016 Games, a six-person team represented the South American nation in four sports - athletics, badminton, swimming and judo. The athlete delegation was the NOC's largest since 1996 in Atlanta.
