General Interest

Sudan made its first Olympic appearance in 1960, but it was not until 2008 that the NOC won its first medal. In Beijing, Ismail Ahmed Ismail took silver in the men's 800m athletics event, finishing just five-hundredths of a second behind the gold medallist Wilfred Bungei from Kenya. Beijing was Ismail's second Olympic Games, and he went on to compete again in London but could not repeat his medal-winning heroics.

Before Ismail's Beijing 2008 effort, Sudan's best Olympic result was recorded by triple jumper Yamile Aldama who leapt 14.99m in the final in Athens, finishing fifth.

A six-member team of four men and two women represented Sudan in athletics, judo and swimming at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.
