General Interest
Between the 1948 Olympic Games in London and the 1972 Games in Munich, Sri Lanka competed at the Games under its former name of Ceylon. After missing the 1976 Games, the NOC has competed at every edition since 1980.
Duncan White became the first athlete from Sri Lanka to win an Olympic medal. He achieved that feat at the NOC's first participation, in 1948, taking silver in the men's 400m hurdles.
The first women to represent Sri Lanka did so in 1988, with Dipika Chanmuggan swimming the 100m-200m breaststroke double and the 200m individual medley, and Tilaka Jinadasa entering the 100m hurdles.
Twelve years after the first women competed for Sri Lanka, a woman won the NOC's second and still most recent Olympic medal. Susanthika Jayasinghe finished third in the women's 200m in athletics at Sydney 2000 and subsequently had her bronze medal upgraded to silver when Marion Jones was stripped of her Olympic title for doping offences.
After missing the 2004 Games in Athens, Jayasinghe competed in her third Olympics at the 2008 Games in Beijing, this time placing 13th in the 200m.
Sri Lanka sent a team of nine athletes to the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.
