General Interest

Somalia's first Olympic contingent competed at the 1972 Games in Munich where an all-male team contested athletics events. Since those first Games, every subsequent Somali contestant has also competed in athletics. The first woman to represent the NOC did so in 2000 in Sydney.

The best-performed athlete from the NOC is Abdi Bile Abdi who finished sixth in the men's 1500m at the Atlanta 1996 Games. He finished third in his first round and semifinal races before his sixth-place finish in the final. Bile Abdi was competing at his second Games after he ran the 800m and 1500m at the 1984 Games.

At the 2000 Games in Sydney, Safia Abukar Hussein became Somalia's first female Olympic representative when she competed in the 400m in athletics.
