General Interest
Slovakia competed as an independent NOC for the first time at the 1996 Games in Atlanta and immediately won a medal of each type in those first Games. Before 1996, athletes of Slovakian origin competed under the Czechoslovakia flag - between 1920 and 1992.
The first gold medallist for Slovakia was Michal Martikan, he won the C1 slalom title at the 1996 Games and then took another four medals [gold in 2008, silver in 2000 and 2004, and bronze in 2012] at the next four Games in the same event.
Twin brothers Pavol and Peter Hochschorner sit atop Slovakia's gold medal table, they teamed up to win three-consecutive C2 slalom titles between 2000 and 2008 and then added a bronze at the 2012 Games in London.
Elena Kaliska is the most prominent female Olympian from Slovakia, she won the women's K1 slalom event at the 2004 and 2008 Games, her third and fourth Olympic appearances.
At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Slovakia won four medals, including two gold. Matej Toth stood on top of the podium in the men's 50km walk and cousins Peter and Ladislav Skantar took gold in the men's C2 canoe slalom. The gold medal won by Toth was the first for the NOC in a sport other than canoe slalom.
