General Interest
At the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, Joseph Schooling claimed gold in the men's 100m butterfly. It was the NOC's first Olympic gold medal and the only medal it won at the 2016 Games in Brazil. Schooling finished ahead of US swimmer Michael Phelps, South African Chad Le Clos and Hungarian Laszlo Cseh who all touched the wall in exactly the same time and shared the silver medal. Schooling also competed in London in 2012 when he was 17 years old..
Singapore's first Olympic medal was claimed by Howe-Liang Tan, a weightlifter who competed at three Olympic Games in his career. His medal was won in his second Games in 1960 when he lifted a total of 380kg in the 67.5kg category to finish 17.5kg behind the gold medallist from the Soviet Union, Viktor Bushuyev.
At the 2000 Games in Sydney, Jing Jun Hong finished fourth in the women's table tennis singles event. That result began a good run for Singapore in the sport, with the NOC subsequently winning its three other medals in the sport.
The NOC's second medal in the sport, another silver, was won by the women's table tennis team at the 2008 Beijing Games, where the team led by Feng Tianwei lost to the People's Republic of China in the final. Feng would then go on to win singles bronze in London, with the women's team also claiming a bronze medal in 2012.
