General Interest

San Marino was first represented by a team at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, entering athletes in shooting, cycling and wrestling events. Since those Games, shooting has proved to be the sport in which the NOC has entered the most athletes, and also the sport in which it has recorded its best results.

Trap shooter Alessandra Perilli recorded San Marino's best result, a fourth, at the London 2012 Games. Perilli went to a medal shoot-off with two other athletes in London after all three finished the final round with 93 points, but the San Marino athlete lost out, missing her second shot to fall out of the medal positions. She competed alongside her older sister Arianna in the same event four years later, this time placing 16th and behind her sister who finished in 13th place.

Prior to Perilli's London 2012 effort, other shooters - namely Francesco Nanni and Emanuela Felici - had significant Olympic results. Nanni finished fifth in the men's 50m rifle prone event in 1984 and Felici finished in seventh position in the women's trap event at both the 2000 and 2004 Games.

San Marino sent a team of four athletes to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, competing in shooting and athletics events.
