General Interest
Romania's first Olympic medal came in men's rugby union at the 1924 Games where the team lost both of its two games by a heavy margin, but as there were only three teams entered in the tournament, Romania took the bronze. The first individual medal, a silver, was won by Henri Rang in the men's equestrian jumping at the 1936 Games in Berlin.
Nadia Comaneci is one of Romania's most well-known athletes, and one of the most famous names in gymnastics. Comaneci scored the first perfect 10 in Olympic gymnastics history at Montreal 1976 as a 14-year-old, getting the perfect score from the judges in the uneven bars qualifying round. She scored perfect 10s a further six times on her way to becoming the face of the 1976 Games in which she finished with three gold, one silver and one bronze.
At Comaneci's second and final Games in 1980 in Moscow, she won two more gold medals and two silver, to bring her career total to nine, the most of any Romanian athlete. She was later inducted into the Gymnastics Hall of Fame and was awarded the Olympic Order.
Comaneci was at the forefront of a generation of excellent Romanian gymnasts, with Ecaterina Szabo [four gold, one silver], Daniela Silivas [three gold, two silver, one bronze] and Simona Amanar [three gold, one silver, three bronze] all having great success in subsequent Games.
Comaneci's Romanian record of five Olympic gold medals has subsequently been matched by two rowers, Elisabeta Lipa and Georgeta Andrunache. Lipa won at least one medal at six consecutive Games beginning in 1984 when she won her first gold, and first of three medals in the double sculls. She had her most success in the women's eight, taking gold medals in 1996, 2000 and 2004, but she also won a gold in the single sculls in 1992. Lipa's eight total medals for Romania is second only to Comaneci's nine.
Andrunache won gold in women's pair and eight at both the 2000 and 2004 Games. In Beijing in 2008, she again won the pair title and claimed bronze in the eight.
Romania won four medals [one gold, one silver, two bronze] at the Rio 2016 Games. Romania's sole gold medal in Rio came in the women's team epee fencing competition.
