General Interest

The Republic of Moldova first competed as an independent nation at the summer Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996. Before that, athletes from the region of modern-day Republic of Moldova had competed for Romania, the Soviet Union and the Unified Team.

At the Seoul 1988 Games, Victor Reneisky and Nikolay Juravski teamed up to paddle their way to the C2 500m and C2 1000m gold for the Soviet Union. Four years later, after not being selected to the Unified Team, Juravski undertook a defence of his gold medals competing for Romania, but could only finish fourth in both events. At the 1996 Games, Reneisky and Juravski reunited to compete for the Republic of Moldova, winning silver in the C2 500m and finishing fifth over 1000m.

Sergej Mureiko also won a medal for the NOC at the 1996 Games. He took bronze in the men's Greco-Roman wrestling 130kg event before going on to compete for Bulgaria at the next two Games, but was unable to repeat that success.
