General Interest

The Refugee Olympic Team was officially created in 2016 following a 2015 announcement by the International Olympic Committee [IOC] president Thomas Bach at the United Nations [UN] General Assembly. At the 2016 Games the NOC was represented by 10 athletes who originally hailed from Ethiopia, South Sudan, the Syrian Arab Republic, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Eighteen-year-old swimmer Yusra Mardini became the first athlete to compete for the Refugee Olympic Team when she raced in the heats of the women's 100m butterfly.

Ahead of the 2020 Games in Tokyo the IOC selected 29 athletes to compete across 12 different sports, with six athletes from the 2016 team returning to once again represent the Refugee Olympic Team.
