General Interest

Sprinter David Nepomuceno was the first athlete to represent the Philippines at an Olympic Games when he was the lone athlete on the NOC's 1924 team in Paris. Four years later, Teofilo Yldefonzo won the NOC's first Olympic medal when he took bronze in the men's 200m breaststroke at the Amsterdam 1928 Games, a feat he would repeat in the same event four years later in Los Angeles in 1932.

The 1932 Games were the first and still only Games in which the Philippines has won multiple medals. Simeon Toribio claimed the bronze medal in the men's high jump and Jose Villanueva finished with bronze in the bantamweight division in boxing.

Villanueva's son, Anthony Villanueva, won the NOC's first silver medal in 1964 when he lost a split decision gold medal bout to the Soviet Union's Stanislav Stepashkin.

Boxing is the sport in which the Philippines has entered the most athletes and the sport has accounted for half of the NOC's 10 total medals [two silver, three bronze].

The Philippines' most famous athlete, Manny Pacquiao, is also a boxer and despite having never competed at an Olympic Games, he was given the honour of carrying the country's flag into the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

At the Rio 2016 Games, a 13-person team represented the Philippines in eight sports and weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz broke a 20-year medal drought for the NOC when she claimed silver in the women's 53kg division. Diaz also became the first female athlete from the NOC to win an Olympic medal.
