General Interest

Paraguay's top two Olympic moments have come on the football pitch. After reaching the quarterfinals in Barcelona in 1992, the men's football team claimed Paraguay's first and only Olympic medal when it lost in the final of the Athens 2004 competition.

In Greece, the team emerged top of a group that contained Italy, Ghana and Japan with two wins and one loss. In the quarterfinals, Paraguay beat the Republic of Korea 3-2 and then knocked Iraq out with a 3-1 win in the semifinals. In the final, however, the nation's large southern neighbour Argentina proved too strong, beating Paraguay 1-0 to claim gold.

Paraguay first competed at the Olympic Games in 1968, and since then the NOC has only missed one edition of the Games. The country's first Olympian was fencer Rodolfo Da Ponte.

Ramon Jimenez Gaona competed in the men's discus event at the 1988, 1992 and 1996 Games - he also carried the flag into the opening ceremony on each occasion. Fellow field athlete Leryn Franco has three-consecutive javelin event participations, her first was in 2004 and table tennis player Marcelo Aguirre competed in his third consecutive Games in Rio de Janeiro.
