General Interest

At the Rio 2016 Games, six men and two women represented Papua New Guinea in six sports. The NOC's best result in Rio was Morea Baru's sixth-place finish in the men's 62kg weightlifting event.

Papua New Guinea competed at its first Games in 1976, just one year after it gained independence from Australia. At those first Games, six male athletes competed in three sports - boxing, athletics and shooting.

Papua New Guinean athletes have competed at every Games since 1984. A significant result for the NOC at the Olympic Games was recorded by swimmer Ryan Pini when he reached the final of the men's 100m butterfly in 2008. Pini competed at four Games between 2004 and 2016, the equal-most of any Papua New Guinean athlete.

At the Athens 2004 Games, weightlifter Dika Toua finished sixth in the women's 53kg event, and four years later in Beijing finished seventh in the same weight division. Toua has four Olympic weightlifting competitions to her name, matching Pini for the most Games appearances for an athlete from the NOC.
