North Macedonia - Profile
General Interest
Athletes from North Macedonia competed for Yugoslavia between 1920 and 1988. After the breakup of Yugoslavia, North Macedonia [then named the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia] competed at the summer Olympic Games as an independent nation for the first time at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. The NOC was represented by 12 athletes in five sports, and it is still the largest contingent to represent the NOC at a single edition of the Games.
Four of the athletes that competed for the NOC in 1996 had competed under the IOC flag at the 1992 Games in Barcelona. Another 1996 representative, freestyle wrestler Saban Trstena, had already won one gold and one silver medal for Yugoslavia at the 1984 and 1988 Games, respectively.
Wrestler Magomed Ibragimov won North Macedonia's one and only Olympic medal, a bronze in men's 85kg freestyle at the Sydney Games in 2000. He had competed under the Azerbaijan flag at the 1996 Games, finishing fifth in the 82kg category, and went on to also compete at the 2004 Games.
Another of the athletes to compete under the IOC flag in 1992 was slalom paddler Lazar Popovski. He went on to compete at four consecutive Games and recorded his best result, 16th in the K1, at his final Games in Athens in 2004.
At the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, the NOC sent a six-person team to compete in athletics, swimming, judo and shooting.
