General Interest

Mozambique sent a team to an Olympic Games for the first time in 1980. A team of 14, still the NOC's largest contingent, travelled to Moscow to compete in various athletics and swimming events. Since then, athletes have represented Mozambique at every subsequent edition of the Games.

Maria Mutola competed at six-consecutive Olympic Games between her first in 1988, where she competed as a 15-year-old, and her last at Beijing 2008. Mutola raced primarily in the 800m, and she ended her Olympic career with one gold, won over the distance in 2000, and one bronze won four years earlier. She remains the only athlete from Mozambique to have won an Olympic medal.

At the Rio 2016 Games, Mozambique sent a six-member team that competed in swimming, athletics, canoe sprint and judo.
