General Interest
At the Rio 2016 Games, Morocco sent a 49-member team to compete in 14 sports. Boxer Mohammed Rabii was the NOC's sole medallist, claiming a bronze in the men's welterweight division.
Morocco has only once missed an Olympic Games since its first in 1960. The NOC won its first medal in 1960 when Rhadi Ben Abdesselem finished with silver in the men's marathon, beginning what would be a rich history in middle and long-distance running.
It would be another 24 years before Morocco would win another medal, but this time athletes representing the NOC would bring home two, both gold. The first to win gold in 1984 was women's 400m hurdler Nawal El Moutawakel and a few days later Said Aouita won the men's 5000m.
Since then, only three other Moroccan athletes have won gold medals, and they are led by Hicham El Guerrouj who is regarded as one of the top middle-distance runners in athletics history. El Guerrouj became one of the faces of the Athens 2004 Games after he won two middle distance events, doing the 1500m-5000m gold double and becoming the first athlete since Finland's Paavo Nurmi in 1924 to achieve that feat at a single Olympic Games. El Guerrouj remains the only Moroccan to win multiple gold medals.
Boxing is the only other sport in which the NOC has won medals. All four of them have been bronze medals, with the most recent claimed by Mohammed Rabii in the welterweight division in 2016.
