General Interest

Montenegro made its debut as an independent nation at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. The men's water polo team almost secured a medal at the NOC's Olympic debut, losing the bronze medal match to neighbours Serbia.

The women's handball team claimed Montenegro's first Olympic medal with a second-place finish at the London 2012 Games. In the quarterfinals, the Montenegrins caused an upset, beating group B winners France 23-22 with a last-second penalty goal and then had another one-goal win over Spain in the semifinals. In the final, Montenegro faced reigning Olympic champion Norway, and despite being heavy underdogs, gave a good showing to fall just three goals short, losing 26-23.

The only non-water polo player to have appeared in all three Games for Montenegro is judoka Srdjan Mrvaljevic. He competed in the 81kg category on all three occasions and achieved his highest position, equal ninth, in 2008 and again four years later in 2012.

Montenegro went without a medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, narrowly missing out on the podium in the men's water polo after losing to Italy 12-10 in the bronze medal match. The team had previously been knocked out at the semifinal stage 12-8 by Croatia. It was the third consecutive Games in which the men's water polo team had finished in fourth place.
