General Interest

Mongolia sent a team to the Olympic Games for the first time at the 1964 Games in Tokyo and since then has sent a team to each subsequent edition of the Games except one [1984]. In its 13 Olympic appearances the NOC has only failed to win a medal on two occasions, the first on its debut appearance in 1964 and the second at Sydney 2000.

Mongolia won its first gold medals at the Beijing 2008 Games in what was the NOC's 11th Olympic participation. The gold medals were won by Tuvshinbayar Naidan and Enkhbat Badar Uugan in judo and boxing, respectively.

Tuvshinbayar would return to the Games in 2012 to defend his 100kg title, and almost did, winning silver after being beaten by Russian Tagir Khaybulayev in the final. That silver did, however, make him the only Mongolian to win two Olympic medals for the NOC. He competed in his third successive 100kg event at the 2016 Games in Rio, but failed to advance past the early rounds.

Munkhbayar Dorjsuren was the first woman to win a medal for Mongolia. She won a 25m pistol bronze medal in 1992 and later won another bronze in the same event in 2008, but this time for Germany after she switched her allegiance.

Mongolia won two medals at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Sumiya Dorjsuren took silver in the women's 57kg judo competition and Dorjnyambuu Otgondalai claimed a bronze in the men's lightweight division in boxing.
