Mexico - Profile
General Interest
Mexico sent relatively small teams to the 1924 and 1928 Games and won its first medals at the 1932 Games in Los Angeles where Francisco Cabanas and Gustavo Huet took silver in the men's boxing flyweight division and men's 50m prone rifle events, respectively.
After winning those first two medals, Mexico has gone on to win at least one medal at every edition of the Games since. Mexico's first Olympic gold medals were won in the equestrian jumping individual and team events at the 1948 Games in London. Humberto Mariles Cortes won the individual title riding Arete and he was joined by Ruben Uriza and Alberto Valdes Sr. in winning the team event gold. Mariles Cortes remains the only Mexican athlete to win two Olympic gold medals.
Mexico's next gold medal was won by diver Joaquin Capilla, who took the men's 10m platform title at the 1956 Games in Melbourne as well as a bronze in the 3m springboard. The 1956 Games were Capilla's third, he won his first medal, a bronze, in the 10m platform at the 1948 Games then took silver in the same event at the 1952 Games. Capilla's four medals are the most won by a Mexican athlete.
Mexico has also had a lot of success in race walking events, with the 1984 Games being the high-point. Mexico did the men's walk double in Los Angeles, with Raul Gonzalez winning the men's 50km event and Ernesto Canto winning the 20km race. Gonzalez also took silver in the 20km event.
Two Games earlier, Daniel Bautista won Mexico's first Olympic walking gold, taking the 20km title in Montreal. At the 2016 Games, Maria Guadalupe Gonzalez became the first woman to win a race walking medal for Mexico when she took silver in the 20km event.
Mexico had one of its most successful Games in London in 2012. The NOC won eight total medals, its second-highest total after the nine it won as host in 1968. A highlight in London was the success of the men's football team, who overcame a star-studded Brazil team 2-1 to claim the gold medal.
Mexico won five medals at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, three silver and two bronze. Diver German Sanchez's silver in the men's 10m platform event was the 14th diving medal for Mexico at the Olympic Games making it the most successful sport in terms of total medals won by the NOC.
