General Interest
Malawi first sent representatives to an Olympic Games in 1972 in Munich where athletes competed in three sports. Since then, Malawi has sent teams to nine further editions of the Games, but has yet to win a medal.
The best result for an athlete from Malawi came in 1984 when boxer Peter Ayesu reached the quarterfinals of the flyweight division. He went on to compete at the 1988 Games, but could not match his performance from four years earlier.
Long-distance runner John Mwathiwa is the NOC's only three-time Olympian, competing in the marathon event at both the 1988 and 1996 editions and the men's 10,000m at Barcelona 1992.
At the Rio 2016 Games, five athletes represented Malawi, two in athletics, two in swimming and one in archery. Areneo David's appearance in the individual archery competition was the NOC's first participation in the sport.
