Kyrgyzstan sent 19 athletes to the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. The delegation included Denis Petrashov competing in the men's 200m breaststroke at age 16. Petrashov was following in the footsteps of his swimmer father Evgeniy, who participated at the Games in 1996, 2000 and 2004.
Evgeniy Petrashov is one of a number of Kyrgyzstani athletes to have made three appearances at the Olympic Games. Cyclist Eugen Wacker and marathon runner Irina Bogacheva also competed at consecutive editions of the Games between 1996 and 2004. Tatyana Efimenko participated in the women's high jump between 2000 and 2008, while another marathon runner, Yulia Andreeva, took part in the women's race at three editions of the Games between 2008 and 2016.
Kyrgyzstan's first Olympic medal came at the 2000 Games in Sydney, with judoka Aidyn Smagulov claiming bronze in the men's 60kg category. All of Kyrgyzstan's subsequent medals were won in wrestling at Beijing 2008. Greco-Roman wrestlers Kanatbek Begaliev [66kg] and Ruslan Tumenbaev [60kg] secured silver and bronze, respectively, while freestyle wrestler Bazar Bazarguruev won a bronze medal in the men's 60kg division. Bazarguruev had originally finished out of the medals but was moved up to the bronze medal position nine years later following a doping violation by another athlete.
