Kuwait - Profile
General Interest
Kuwait made its debut at the Olympic Games in 1968 in Mexico City, where distance runners Mraljeb A'Yed-Mansoor and Saoud Obaid Daifallah competed in the men's marathon. The NOC was represented at each of the following 11 editions of the Games up to London 2012, but Kuwaiti athletes had to compete under the Olympic flag at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro because the Kuwait Olympic Committee [KOC] had been suspended by the International Olympic Committee [IOC] in October 2015. The ban was lifted in July 2019.
The first Kuwaiti athlete to win an Olympic medal was shooter Fehaid Aldeehani, who claimed bronze in men's double trap in Sydney in 2000. He added another bronze to his collection at London 2012 in men's trap, before claiming gold as an Independent Olympic Athlete in men's double trap in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Aldeehani is the only athlete to have finished on the podium at the Olympic Games while competing under the Kuwaiti flag, and the first competitor of any nationality to have won a gold medal as an Independent Olympic Athlete.
Fellow Kuwaiti shooter Abdullah Alrashidi secured bronze in men's skeet at Rio 2016, also as an Independent Olympic Athlete. He and Aldeehani share Kuwait's appearance record at the Olympic Games. Alrashidi represented Kuwait at five consecutive Games between 1996 and 2012, while Aldeehani missed only the 2008 Games in Beijing between 1992 and 2012. Both men made their sixth Olympic appearance as Independent Olympic Athletes at Rio 2016.
The first female athlete to represent Kuwait was sprinter Danah Al Nasrallah at the 2004 Games in Athens. In her sole Olympic appearance, Al Nasrallah set a national record in the 100m but did not advance from her heat.
