General Interest

The 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro were the most successful in Kenya's Olympic history. The NOC claimed all its medals in athletics, finishing with six gold, six silver and one bronze. Kenya's highest medal total at a single edition of the Games came at Beijing 2008, where athletes from the NOC won 16 overall - six gold, four silver and six bronze.

Kenya first sent athletes to the Olympic Games in 1956 in Melbourne to compete in events in athletics, hockey, shooting and swimming. The NOC's first medal came eight years later at the 1964 Games in Tokyo, where Wilson Kiprugut claimed bronze in the men's 800m. Since then, Kenyan competitors have won more than 100 medals at the Olympic Games in just two sports - athletics and boxing. The vast majority were in distance running and steeplechase, with only a total of seven coming in the boxing ring.

Naftali Temu claimed Kenya's first Olympic gold medal at the 1968 Games in Mexico City, winning the men's 10,000m. One of his teammates in Mexico, Kip Keino, claimed gold in the men's 1500m later in the Games and went on to become Kenya's most successful Olympian. Keino won his second Olympic gold medal in the 3000m steeplechase four years later in Munich, and also secured two silver medals during his career - in the 5000m at Mexico City 1968 and in the 1500m at Munich 1972. His two Olympic gold medals is the equal-most of any Kenyan, while his overall haul of four means he shares the record for the highest total by an athlete from the NOC. Vivian Cheruiyot became the only other Kenyan athlete to win a total of four Olympic medals at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. She won gold in the women's 5000m and silver in the 10,000m to add to her silver and bronze in the same events from London 2012.

Two more Kenyan athletes have won two gold medals at the Olympic Games. David Lekuta Rudisha claimed gold in the men's 800m in a world record time at the 2012 Games in London, and then successfully defended his title four years later in Rio de Janeiro. The other is Ezekiel Kemboi, who claimed his second 3000m steeplechase title at London 2012, repeating his victory from 2004. It was the eighth consecutive edition of the Games in which a Kenyan athlete had won gold in the men's 3000m steeplechase. Conseslus Kipruto extended that record to nine at Rio 2016, setting an Olympic record in the process.

Kenya's sole gold medallist in boxing is Robert Wangila, who claimed the welterweight title in 1988 in Seoul. The only Kenyan boxer with more than one medal is Philip Waruinge. He secured bronze in the featherweight division at Mexico City 1968, which was also Kenya's first Olympic medal in the sport, and then won a silver medal in the same division at Munich 1972.
