General Interest

Athletes from the Islamic Republic of Iran have won more medals in weightlifting and wrestling than in any other sports at the Olympic Games. Weightlifter Jaffar Salmassi secured the NOC's first medal, claiming bronze in the men's 60kg category at the 1948 Games in London, while Iranian freestyle wrestlers won a total of five medals [two silver and three bronze] four years later in 1952 in Helsinki. There were also two further weightlifting medals in 1952, with Mahmoud Namdjou and Ali Mirzai claiming silver and bronze, respectively, in the men's 56kg class. A noteworthy member of the Iranian Olympic teams in 1948 and 1952 was boxer Emanoul Agassi, father of eight-time Grand Slam winner and 1996 singles tennis Olympic gold medallist Andre Agassi.

The Islamic Republic of Iran secured its first Olympic gold medals at the 1956 Games in Melbourne, where freestyle wrestlers Emamali Habibi [66kg] and Gholamreza Takhti [90kg] both won their divisions. Takhti, who competed at the Games for the final time in 1964, also won silver medals in 1952 and 1960 and is one of the NOC's most successful Olympic athletes. His three medals mean he holds the joint-record for most podium finishes by an Iranian athlete at the Games, and he also shares the NOC's Olympic appearance record [four] with fellow freestyle wrestler Amir Reza Khadem Azghadi [1988-2000] and weightlifter Mohammed Nassiri [1964-1976]. Iranian wrestlers have won a total of 10 Olympic gold medals to date [seven in freestyle and three in Greco-Roman] out of an overall haul of 43 medals across the two disciplines.

The Islamic Republic of Iran's second-most successful sport is weightlifting, with Hossein Reza Zadeh winning two of the NOC's eight gold medals. Competing in the +105kg super-heavyweight division, Reza Zadeh won his first gold at Sydney 2000 and set a world record of 472.5kg in the process. He successfully defended the title in 2004, cementing his place in the history of the sport with a world record in the clean and jerk portion of the competition.

The only other Iranian athlete to have won two gold medals at the Olympic Games is taekwondoka Hadi Saei. He claimed his first title in the featherweight division at Athens 2004 and then moved up to the welterweight category for his second gold medal four years later in Beijing. Saei also won a bronze medal at the 2000 Games in Sydney.
