Indonesia - Profile
General Interest
Indonesia first participated at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki where a three-person team represented the NOC in athletics, swimming and weightlifting. Indonesia won its first Olympic medal 36 years later when Kusuma Wardhani, Lilies Handayani and Nurfitriyana Saiman teamed up at the 1988 Games in Seoul to win a silver medal in the women's recurve archery team event.
Indonesia has claimed a minimum of three medals at each edition of the Olympic Games since 1992, with a high of six at Sydney 2000 and Beijing 2008. The NOC won its first gold medals at the 1992 Games in Barcelona, where badminton players Allan Budi Kusuma and Susi Susanti secured the individual titles for men and women, respectively.
Indonesia has won at least one gold medal in badminton at each edition of the Games since 1992, with the exception of London 2012. Although no Indonesian badminton player has won more than one Olympic gold medal, athletes from the NOC secured the men's doubles title in 1996, 2000, and 2008, while there was a gold medal in men's singles for Taufik Hidayat in 2004. Lilyana Natsir teamed up with Tontowi Ahmad to win the mixed doubles title at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro to add to the silver medal she won in mixed doubles at Beijing 2008.
Other Indonesian athletes with multiple medals include weightlifters Raema Lisa Rumbewas and Eko Yuli Irawan. Rumbewas claimed two silver medals and a bronze in the women's competition over three editions of the Games between 2000 and 2008, while Irawan won a total of two bronze medals and one silver medal in the men's 56kg category [2008] and 62kg category [2012, 2016].
The record for the most Olympic appearances by an Indonesian athlete is four, and is shared by four competitors. Female tennis player Yayuk Basuki was the first to hit the mark, competing at four consecutive editions of the Games between 1988 and 2000. She was then followed by sailor Oka Sulaksana and badminton player Flandi Limpele, who both competed at the Games in 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2008. Taufik Hidayat made up the quartet following consecutive Olympic appearances between 2000 and 2012.
