General Interest
Iceland first participated at the Olympic Games in London in 1908. Wrestler Johannes Josefsson, the NOC's only athlete at the Games, placed fourth in the Greco-Roman 84kg event. Iceland was represented at the 1912 Games in Stockholm, but did not compete again until 1936. Since then, the NOC has sent a delegation of athletes to every edition of the Games.
Triple jumper Vilhjalmur Einarsson won Iceland's first Olympic medal, claiming silver at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. His son, Einar Vilhjalmsson, competed in javelin throw at three editions of the Olympic Games between 1984 and 1992, recording a best finish of sixth at Los Angeles 1984.
Judoka Bjarni Fridriksson claimed Iceland's second Olympic medal, winning bronze in the men's 100kg category in 1984. Fridriksson [1980-1992] also shares the Icelandic Olympic appearance record of four with discus thrower Vesteinn Hafsteinsson [1984-1996]. At Sydney 2000, Vala Flosadottir became Iceland's first female Olympic medallist when she won bronze in the pole vault.
At the 2008 Games in Beijing, Iceland won its first team medal at the Olympic Games when the men's handball squad secured silver. The team only managed to finish third in its group in the preliminary round but beat Poland 32-30 in the quarterfinal, then Spain 36-30 in the semifinal, before losing to France 28-23 in the gold medal match.
Icelandic athletes competed across events in athletics, swimming, artistic gymnastics, and judo at Rio 2016. Hrafnhildur Luthersdottir claimed the NOC's best result at the Games, finishing sixth in the final of the women's 100m breaststroke.
