Hong Kong, China - Profile
General Interest
Hong Kong, China took part in its first Olympic Games in 1952 in Helsinki, where the NOC was represented by a team of four swimmers. Hong Kong, China has sent a team of athletes to every edition of the Games since then apart from Moscow 1980.
Hong Kong, China has entered more athletes in swimming than in any other sport, but the NOC won its first Olympic medal in sailing. Mistral windsurfer Lee Lai Shan claimed gold at Atlanta 1996, showing such consistency over the first eight races of the competition that she did not need to contest the ninth and final race to be sure of the Olympic title. Having made her debut at the Games in 1992 in Barcelona, Lee went on to compete at two more Olympic Games [2000, 2004] but did not win another medal, just missing the podium with a fourth-place finish at Athens 2004. She remains the only athlete from Hong Kong, China to have won a gold medal at the Olympic Games.
The NOC's second medal came at the 2004 Games in Athens. Table tennis players Li Ching and Ko Lai Chak claimed silver after losing to Chinese pair Ma Lin and Chen Qi in the men's doubles final. Track cyclist Lee Wai Sze won Hong Kong, China's third and most recent Olympic medal at London 2012, securing bronze in the women's keirin.
Cyclist Wong Kam-Po and shooter Peter Rull Sr. share the appearance record for athletes from Hong Kong, China at the Olympic Games with five. Wong competed on the road and the track between 1996 and 2012, while Rull Sr. contested rifle events at five consecutive Games from 1960 to 1976. His son Peter Rull Jr. also represented Hong Kong, China in shooting at the Olympic Games, competing in the men's 50m rifle prone at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles.
