General Interest

Ghana competed at the Olympic Games for the first time in 1952 under the name of the Gold Coast. The NOC missed the 1956 Games in Melbourne but returned at the 1960 Games in Rome and participated as Ghana for the first time. Barring 1976 in Montreal and 1980 in Moscow, the NOC has competed at each edition of the Games since.

Boxer Clement Quartey became the first Ghanaian competitor to win a medal at the Olympic Games, claiming silver in the men's light welterweight division in 1960 in Rome. Quartey remains the only athlete from Ghana in any sport to have won an Olympic silver medal. Fellow boxers Eddie Blay [1964] and Prince Amartey [1972] claimed bronze in the light welterweight and middleweight categories, respectively.

Ghana's only other Olympic medal came in football at the 1992 Games in Barcelona. After beating Paraguay 4-2 in the quarterfinals, Ghana went down to eventual gold medallists Spain 2-0 in the semifinal before securing third place by defeating Australia 1-0. The bronze medal is Ghana's only podium finish in a team sport at the Olympic Games, and it was also the first medal in football to be won by an NOC from Africa at the Olympic Games.

The Olympic appearance record for Ghana is shared by three athletes - Vida Anim, Aziz Zakari, and Francis Dodoo. Sprinters Anim [2000-2012] and Zakari [1996-2008], and triple jumper Dodoo [1984-1996] have all competed at the Games on four occasions. At Rio 2016, swimmer Kaya Forson became Ghana's youngest Olympian when she participated in the women's 200m freestyle at age 14 years and 143 days.
