Fiji - Profile
General Interest
The introduction of rugby sevens to the Olympic programme for the first time at Rio 2016 gave the NOC a great opportunity to win its first Olympic medal. And the men's team did not disappoint, securing a 43-7 victory over Great Britain in the final to claim gold.
Fiji's first appearance at the Olympic Games was in Melbourne in 1956 where athletes represented the NOC in sailing, boxing and athletics. Miriama Tuisorisori-Chambault was the first female athlete to represent Fiji at the Olympic Games, and she also carried the flag into the opening ceremony on her debut in 1976. She competed in the long jump and pentathlon in athletics in Montreal, and on her second Olympic appearance eight years later in Los Angeles she contested the 100m and 200m sprints.
Sailor Tony Philp and swimmer Carl Probert share the distinction of having made most Olympic appearances for Fiji, with five each. Philp competed in five consecutive editions of the Games between 1984 and 2000, while Probert represented Fiji in the pool at every Games from 1992 to 2008.
