General Interest
Swimmer Eric Moussambani is perhaps Equatorial Guinea's most well-known athlete at the Olympic Games. 'Eric the Eel', as he became known, hit the spotlight in 2000 in Sydney where he competed in men's 100m freestyle. In his heat, Moussambani was the only swimmer to complete the race after his two fellow competitors were disqualified for false starting. His time of 1:52.72 was not enough to qualify for the next round but did set a national record for Equatorial Guinea. Moussambani was also the first athlete from the NOC to have competed in a sport other than athletics.
Sprinter Gustavo Envela Mahua holds the appearance record for athletes from Equatorial Guinea with four. Envela Mahua contested the men's 100m and 200m on his Olympic debut at the 1984 Games when he was just age 16, and competed in the 200m and 4x100m relay on his final appearance at Atlanta 1996.
Mita Nchamt Jose was the first athlete from the NOC to compete in judo at the Olympic Games, contesting the men's 81kg category in 2008 in Beijing.
